time to stock up on ammo

Ron Paul and Lindsey Williams have convinced me time is running out and we are on the coutndown..Ammo is high on my SHTF list..

I just buy what I shot and have a little in reserve. Where is the best place to buy a bulk purchase where shipping and handling doesn't off set any online discounts? Right now I buy at walmart when i can find it and the local gun store...

Re: time to stock up on ammo

Funny thing about ammo, my wife has told me many times when I go to a gun show, "Don't buy any more guns!" But, she never says a word when I come home with a few thousand rounds of ammo. Go figure?

Buy it where ever you can find it, buy all you can afford. I have local places I buy. I buy at gun shows, I buy online when I have to, but prefer to buy for cash without the paper trail. Aim Surplus, (link above) is one of my favorite online sites. For first order they want a statement that no laws deny you the right and a copy of your DL faxed or mailed to them. That's just about standard with online ammo purchases.

Just discussed this topic - cost of ammo at stores vs. reloading - with someone at work yesterday and I did the math for reloading .45 acp - bullets (per 1000), primers (per 1000), and powder (per 8lbs).

Cost at Wally world for 100 rounds of .45 acp WWB is $32.

100 rounds of .45 acp for me to reload is $17.

Initial layout for the relaoding equipment will be high but I recouped my costs in the first year due to the amount of ammo I go through in a year - 10,000 (+/-) depending on work and deployments (.mil).

What helps me is that I bought my components (powder, primers, and bullets) in bulk in the past, which has really helped with the shortages of the last year. Now I buy as items as they become available to keep the supplies up (rotate just like food preps) and I am not worried about running low.

All I can say is do the math....

Re: time to stock up on ammo

It feels good to have beaucoup stocks of ammo, but keep in mind that your actual need may end up being only a few boxes worth. If you want to practice it may be wise to get .22 caliber items that mirror your main weps. Conversions are cost effective options IF you really intend to plink. If I had to do things all over again I'd only have ever bought guns with either .22 conversions on the market (a la Ciener) or .22 copies available for them. Airsoft AEG's and gas guns are fairly spiffy items to have as well. Don't get too caught up in the Ralphie fantasy of popping Black Bart.
That said, I like to pick up a box or two when I go to the locals. Cost per round may not beat bulk purchase, but then you don't have to pony up several bills to get into it.
I'd say start with a couple hundred commercial defense rounds for your primary piece and trickle purchase from there.

I picked up a Ruger LCR over the weekend. So now I have yet another ammo type I need to stock. Had to get it though. It was the only firearm my wife feels comfortable shooting & loading. I will say this, the thing is accurate with a laser sight.

Re: time to stock up on ammo

My family stocked (both ammo and reloading supplies) up pre-election when it looked like he who must not be mentioned had a chance to win...figured if he didn't we could sell a year later and make a little money. Right now I could easily quadruple my money but I am not selling. I am still buying ammo for shooting and am buying primers when I can. Still buying bulk packs of 22 as well. The three adult males in my family all got interest free credit cards for a year back in 2008 and I think we all maxed them and still paid them off in the interest free time period...lol. I love those offers!

Google California's AB962. It's the end of shooting for most, and it's going to go viral (i.e. coming to a state near you).

Buy all that you can now, for soon you will not be able to buy any.

Best ammo search engine:

For handgun ammo, Walmart is always your best choice for FMJ plinking ammo. For serious defensive stuff, try your local shop or online.

Yeah but there's also the time issue. All those hours spent re-loading you could be getting some extra sleep, getting laid, spending time with the kids, watching a hockey game, etc. I'd rather pay the higher prices, forget about it, and enjoy life.

Heh?

First you put the kids to sleep.
Then you play "lucky burglar" with the wife.
After she falls asleep you do your reloading.

Hornady has an awsome deal that will help offset the initial cost of buying a press and getting set up. I thinks you can get the press from natchez shooting supplies for under $300 last time I looked. With the bullets you get for the purchase you are effectively getting in for half that.

Feb 2011. I visit a Walmart regularly and buy anything that I have a gun to shoot (the same) with. Years from now ammo prices will double or triple.

Gee officer I felt so bad having not had a "boating accident" like all the people at GIM. I sold my entire collection to the "boating accident" victims to make sure that none were gunless.

I had a recent change of heart and I donated my guns to a guns for books program.

I got a copy of the communist manifesto in exchange for a DPMS 308.

Also got a copy of "Rules for radicals" in exchange for my 16 yr old 22lr.

Who woulda thought.

keep shooting only getting cheaper

its a third of the cost it was a year ago and dropping, and no matter how many on here keep saying the sky is falling.
all I know ammo will still be dropping for months to come.

and by the way firearms are dropping even faster then ammo.

Not ready to give up yet, but Sadly, I was having the same thoughts...

On a typical trip to the range, I go with my two longtime best friends and shooting buds and we each go though about

100 or so .45 rnds
200-300 .40 rnds
400-500 .223 rnds
40-60 rnds of .308
sometimes a few hundy .22 or 7.62x39s and maybe some 9mm...

That is why they invented 22LR. Can still get a box of 550 for $15 and change. 3c per shot, is hard to beat, unless you take up rock throwing.

The skills that shoot a 22 well are the same ones that allow marksmanship in larger calibers.

I am considering a 22 rifle as my next addition.. As far as a 22 pistol goes it just doesn't have enough bang-bang for me. I think there is a huge transition to larger caliber pistols. At least I perceive it that way..

I had the opportunity to shoot a Lady marksman very fine and expensive collection of 22s at the Range one day. They were really beautiful pistols and I shot well with them. It was quite a privilege to shoot such fine weapons that I will never be able to afford.. As nice as they were they bored me to tears.

Ill just have to conquer my Jericho.. It took me 2 years to get comfortable with my shotgun. I was terrified of the damn thing for a long time..Ill just have to work more hours to pay for 9mm bullets.

I think .22 is very underrated. How many people are killed by .22 each year compared to other calibers? It might not pack the punch of 9mm, .40 or .45, but I'll carry a .22 any day as a backup.

Moderations in all things... like Socrates or Plato said: when you go to the range, buy TWO boxes, and shoot only ONE... After a while, you'll have a nice stockpile! :s1:

Wish you the best on "learning" your Jericho.

P.S. Dry firing, as others here have indicated, is your best friend! :)

Worked pretty well on the Germans :-), and you can't beat 0.10/round ammo. Plus they go BOOM quite nicely.

Anything works if it's a fairly reliable design and if you're trained with any marksmanship. I wouldn't have wanted to go to battle with the Ross Rifle http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ross_rifle

The Germans were way out numbered, esp during the final half of the war. They didn't have a chance, but I have to give them credit..... they didn't quit until they couldn't do anymore. They could have actually won if they didn't lose Stalingrad (or even fight for it in the first place).

Re: time to stock up on ammo

I would go to Walmart on a regular basis to pick up ammo. I had heart surgery in December and did not get back to doing that until around the first of Feb. As far as I can tell, there have been no new adds AND no removal of ammo inventory from the case. Nor is there an employee in the area anymore. For 8 months prior to that the contents of the case was changing on a daily basis and there was always someone in the immediate area to unlock the case.

I wonder if they have just stopped selling it at this store.

I just buy what I shot and have a little in reserve. Where is the best place to buy a bulk purchase where shipping and handling doesn't off set any online discounts? Right now I buy at walmart when i can find it and the local gun store...

Ammunitiontogo.com... great people, and only sell what they have in stock! :36_3_12:

It is hard to shoot up all your ammo at the range if you start stacking by the case instead of by the box. Stacked 2500 rds of 7.62 x 39 ammo for the AKs last month and 1500 rds of 5.56 ammo for the AR today. My wife is getting annoyed with me that I have so much damn ammo taking up a closet now. On top of that the fat 50 cal ammo cans full of loaded mags seems to also annoy her. Is it a bad thing to have a can full of 28 Magpul mags ready to go and another full of USGI mags for the AR? She doesn't know about the 60 loaded 30rders for the AKs, they are hidden in a big chest.
